Being a "non-expert" in performance chips, I need some advise. My truck is a 98 F-150 ext cab 4X4 with a 4.6L 5 speed manual. The ultimate goal is more power and better gas milage. I know there are different chips on the market, what is the best choice. Also has anyone heard of an altitude chip or any other types of chips that can be installed? Where can I purchase chips?
I installed a SuperChip on my '98 F250 LD. The biggest change was in the auto trans. which you don't have. It really shifts better and rev's higher. I can tell definite increase in power and torque. I think it will be much easier to tow a trailer. I got the chance to race against a '99 F250 SD V10. Mine up and walked away. If you keep your foot out of it it might get better mileage. So far I haven't been able to do it. Most chips offer about the same increase in power. Look for price and tech support when buying. The address for the SuperChip is available at this site but I don't have it with me.

Sounds great, but is this something that can be swapped for the OEM chip at, let's say smog check time or warranty check?
i don't know much about powerchips either and i would like to know what, if any, adverse long run side effects might be on the engine... seeing that the ship makes the truck's engine work harder. Or am I approaching the concept all wrong?
it doesnt matter which chip you have just before inspection/emission time disconnect it.. the diagnostic machine is set to read FACTORY SETTINGS only....so...the quick thing to do is disconnect the night before and go for a half hour drive.... I took my truck in for I/E and the tech was going to fail it cause the machine went haywire... he called me over and disconnected it right in front of me..told me to leave and "get some gas" then come back and he would re do the test...he told me that sometimes people forget and the tech dont think to look...which leads to costly repairs which arent necessary...its easy all the way around and I am very happy with my Jet chip...better gas milage and more uuummmppphhh
well I think you have the concept all wrong... what was explained to me ( and I examine things for weeks on end before I make a decision) was that the chip is designed with a more versatile range than the OEM ....it has more sensors and the settings change with the ..example.. the octane of gas...horsepower needed for load capacity....engine combustion... it takes almost everything into account and changes aspects to optimize what you already have....the only long term affect I have heard about was that sometimes the 02 sensors can give a false positive (check engine light- there is a fix for that also) reading....just check with your chip company and research ...research....research!!
Godzilla: Yes a chip does help quite a bit with an auto tranny. The chip will still show the same horsepower and torque gains on your vehicle, regardless of transmission. You will notice a difference in power throughout the rpm range.
Drop me an e-mail or call and I would be glad to answer any questions you might have.
