Just a quick question. I need to replace the wiper motor in my 1988 F150. To do this, it appears that I need to pull the wiper arms, and remove the cowl to remove the hardware that attaches the wiper linkage to the the motor.
My question: I've never had to remove the cowl on a Ford truck before. Are there more screws to remove that what's immediately visible from under the hood? Anyone ever done this before? Are there any screws hiding under the windsheild trim?
on a 1996 i had to mark and then loosen hood and slide around and still scratched paint. also on 96 the antenna is there and you pick up the cowl and unplug the antenna, i doint know this so i unbolted andtenna and messed around with it and then it just fell apart
I'm pretty sure my antenna mounts in the cowl too. I'll have to watch that. So you folks figure it's just the screws on the inside edge of the hood? No other screws to deal with? Nothing hiding under the fenders?
I just finished taking the cowl off my '89, there are also some screws in the cowl vent area in front of the w/s trim. I did not need to remove the hood, it took some wiggling around to get it out. Are you sure it needs to come off?? I thought there was enough room to unhook the linkage from the motor after unbolting it and pulling it out a bit.
I didn't look that close yet to be honest. I looked at a service manual for a 1993, and it said I needed to remove the cowl, and I assumed that would be the case with mine too. I'd be quite a happy camper if I could change the wiper motor without removing the cowl tho! Do you think it's worth a try?
I just replaced my wiper motor in my 89. Its much easier when you can remove the cowl. It saves on scraping your hand to death while reaching under to remove the locking clip off the wiper tranny.
my 87' with a two speed motor just had a nut on the end of the motor holding on the rest of the stuff. I could have done it without pulling the cowel. Could have just made sure the motor was part way through a wiper swipe and stopped it. Then undo the 3 bolts holding the motor bracket on, pull the motor out far enough to get at the nut, use a 5/16 wrench and take the nut off, use a straight screwdriver and a hammer and give it a good wack to make it come apart. Do the opposite to put it together.
