I have some underbody rust that is starting to bug me, most notable is the diff cover (and no, I don't wanna get a new one yet). Also, some on the inside front doors (lwr portions).
What would be anyone's suggestions as to taking care of this problem? I'm sure that there is some rust inhibitor or attacker (? lol) that you can put on, then spray over? I'm not sure - tried search but I guess I didn't find much of anything. Any help would be appreciated.
What type of rust? like chunks falling off or just the usual surface rust that can just be sandblasted off?
yeah, it's pretty much just surface rust. nothing that looks too bad. i've just never really dealt with rust before, so any help would be appreciated. thanks!
Yeah, the diffy cover you can just sandblast clean. Things on the vehicle i suggest use a wire brush either being hand held of on a grinder. You can use sand paper also if you like.
After wire brushing the surface treat it with phosphoric acid. The acid treatment changes the rust chemically so that paint will stick to the rusted areas. You scrub it in with a scotch bright pad and then flush with water. You can get phosphoric acid at most auto paint stores.
Once you treat the rust it would be be a good idea to prime with an acid etching epoxy primer such as PPG DP primer.
Talk to the people at the paint store and read and follow the instructions on both products.
