Does anyone know how I might be able to get a hold of some CAD files for a 2002 Ford Excursion?
I am currently beginning the design of a command/control type vehicle for a local sheriff's department as a student project. We are using SolidWorks as our CAD program to aid us in developing a picture representation of our design. Having the files for the body and interior of the vehicle would save us a significant amount of time.
Sounds like a cool project, but there's no way you'll get CAD files from Ford. And I agree try to model a complete X would take a looooong time. So long in fact, I'd be looking for alternatives to that plan...like hand renderings.
Or you could find someone with a CMM big enough and sweet talk them into running it through for you.
Good luck! We'd like to see it too!
You are probably going to have to get hold of someone at Ford and explain exactly what you are doing. It would help if you could get your professor, department head, etc. to be with you when you contact them. It's not going to be easy to get, but it may be possible. If they gave you anything it would probably be an overly simplified model just showing the major surfaces, what we call a shrinkwrap at my job.
Honestly, an extended E-350 w/a Quigley 4x4 system would make a better C&C vehicle, IMHO. More headroom, more space, still capable is rough stuff, better chance of getting the CAD you need since there are "many much more" customizers of them out there, easier to partition the front seats from the rear, easier to "make invisible" (or unnoticeable) if needed for stealth operations etc. etc.
Monsta made me think ... and I hate when my brain starts to working. Anyway, have you given any consideration to contacting limousine builders that specialize in Excursions? I imagine they may have some sort of modeling software to visualize modifications with perspective customers.
Thanks to everyone for the responses and idea. I have contacted Ford directly and yes, such files are not available to the public. However, I hadn't thought of contacting any kind of companies that might have such files available. Great idea!
Also, my team is planning a trip to check out the ECRV (Emergency Communications Response Vehicle) stationed in Houston. I'll be sure to ask them about CAD files as well.
i found a couple vendors yesterday when looking. one of them was the vendor from that listing. they have a regular website also, they have several types of swivels including a quick release type, so you can remove the seats. of course you can always fab up your own. with some pipe and plates. just drill a hole through them and use a pin to keep them in place during road travel.
