I had to change the steering gear box on my 88 F-150 4x4. Everything went fine works great except the steering wheel alignment. When all was said and done the wheel is at a 45 degree angle. I've taken all the splines apart twice and there is no way to get it any closer. I thought I would outsmart ford and take the steering wheel off but that spline has a flat spot on it as well. Is there something I'm missing? Any help is greatly appreciated.
What do the adjusters on the tie rod ends look like, is one much further over than the other. Also, did you use the same pitman arm on the two gearboxes ... if not, are they the same length?
I am going to be changing my gearbox soon, my last experience with a ford box is in my 73 Mach1 ... and that was years ago. Is it possible the coupler where the steering shaft hooks up to the gearbox is not in the correct position?
I guess the tie rod ends would be the way to go. I didn't really think about that. It is the same pitman arm. The spline where the steering coupler conects is a one way spline (flat edge). I wonder if I take it in to be alligned if they would fix that? I know I'm not touching those things (20 years of rust).
Shame about the Mach 1. That is one of my favorite cars of all time. My mother had one with headers when I was in Junior high. It was much cooler getting picked up in that than a station wagon!!!!

I actually have the wider Station Wagon steel 14" wheels on it. I restored it about 80% once, then it got flooded, then it sat for about 9 years while I worked on other projects, I was gonna start again after I moved into my house, which I did 2 weeks before Katrina ... now it got flooded again with katrina since I hadn't moved it from my previous residence at that time. First time about 3 foot of water, Katrina about 18" of water. It is my lifelong quest to finish this car.
Hit those adjusters with some liquid wrench or PB Blaster.
