most stock batteries last three to five years...five if your lucky. My 03 still has the stock batts. 86k miles and I am pleasantly surprised, however I have already started priceing new ones...
I have a 2004 F-250 with a 6.0 diesel with 40,000 miles with dead batteries does this sound right to anybody ?
fatrat,
First off welcome to FTE lots of good info and people around here.
Age and extreme cold or hot tempertures kill batteries faster than mileage. Depending where you live and how often the batteries were discharged from leaving items turned on when the engine is off will have a large effect on battery life.
In Phoenix AZ and other hot dry desert climates battery life is about 2-years max.
BTW you must change both batteries at the same time with the dual battery setup.
Thank you for the Information , I feel a lot better now knowing this is not uncommon for batteries to fail at 40,000 miles but what kind of batteries give the best preformance , I have priced the Interstate battery .

There are alot of good batteries on the market, for most applications IMO sealed glass mat batteries (ie Optima) are to expensive for standard use conditions and last no longer in extreme temps than conventional batteries. I buy batteries at Costco as they have free replacement for the first 36 months and then prorated after that. I just change the Costco batteries every two years no questions asked do to the extreme heat in Phoenix most batteries don't last much longer than 24-26 months.
Look for a good fair priced battery that has a good warranty and replacement policy on it. If you have a Costco or Sams Club nearby checkout their batteries.
I have always used interstate in everything I used. This includes my old plow truck, my 65 Pontiac which sits over winter, and every other car I've ever had to replace the battery in. I think they are the best out there.
I am also in Chicagoland, where winter is cold and summer is hot. the batteries have never failed me.
Also, when I ran a repair shop, all we sold were interstate. If I had to replace ONE under warranty a year, it was a banner year.
Interstate batteries are the only way to go!!! I commercial plow and work my batteries to the max and never had a problem. They are worth every penny to me! Hope this helps.
I agree with using the interstate batteries. I use the optima blue tops in my boat and camper, but interstate in the truck. As far as how long a battery lasts who knows. My mothers car is a 98 buick riviera and it has 120,xxx with the original battery still in it.
