Long Trip.

Hey all! I just got back from an extended road trip with my 2004 F450 4x4, had my Lance camper on and towed my 20 ft. enclosed trailer with my 83 Capri race car. Truck did much better than I thought it would. I have been puking coolant when towing, but once the coolant got below the new level decal it stopped puking. Towed thru Colorado and Utah, truck pulled like a train! Fuel average on the "lie-o-meter" dropped from 11.0 to 10.7. I put on about 4000 miles vacationing and racing. Truck did not use any oil or ATF, just washer fluid and a lot of diesel fuel. Had oil changed next day at dealer, and then spent 6 hrs. washing the poor thing! Oh yeah, can any one tell me why the dealerships don't seem to grease the zerks?? I guess I was doing oil changes all wrong all those years. Also the tech keeps putting 3000 mile change interval on reminder sticker, is'nt that a tad short? Any input would be appreciated! God Bless our Troops!! Sounds like a good trip. The MPG sounds good for a dually with the load you had.

The reason the oil change kids at the dealership put 3K OCI is because they install gasser oil in your diesel instead of diesel rated oil..............

Just kidding. Most of the kids they pay to do the oil changes at the dealerships aren't any better than the guys working at Jiffy Lube, they don't know the different OCI between the different vehicles they work on. As far as greasing the greaseable joints, some of them skip them out of laziness.

dalediesel, ford recommends going 7,500 miles before changing the oil. you can always get it tested through blackstone if you are real interested in whats going on.

Actually 7500 miles is for light duty driving, heavy duty driving, towing, extended idling, stop and go traffic, OCI on the 6.0 is 5000 miles. This has been pretty well covered on the boards and in the FMC manual.

Since the injectors are engine oil fired and the HPOP is extremely hard on oil, the engine oil shears down rapidly and 5000 mile OCI are standard for all 6.0 engines to prevent injector problems.

blackhat is right, I wouldn't go past 5k miles on an OCI without sending it in for an oil analysis if I'm going to be towing a lot.
As for the f450 with 4.30 rear end and getting 10.7-11mpg while pulling that kind of load with that type of payload...I'm impressed. I know my F250 SRW wouldn't get that mileage while towing that load. I am jealous though, that sounds like a fun roadtrip. 4000 miles sounds like a good breakin for a nice summer vacation. The only problem is that you spent in fuel what most of us might be paying for our mortgage...gotta love these fuel prices.

dc3655,blackhat620, and darsey715. Gents, thank's for your input, I sort of thought 5000 miles was right. As to missing the zerks, yep, that's laziness. I am gonig to start doing my own LUBE,OIL,FILTERS from now on! Keep on trucking!! DALEDIESEL

It's not only a satisfying feeling doing all the maintenance yourself, but it also gives you the peace of mind knowing that you did it right. Enjoy the truck.
