Question '94 5.8w timing issue

I just finished rebuilding my 5.8 and it started right up fine but when I checked the timing with my digital advance light, it was at 15 deg. After it had run for about an hour I shut it off and following the tag under the hood, I pulled the spout connector and proceeded to adjust the dist. to 10deg. At this point I shut it down and reconnected the spout connector. When I started it up and rechecked it, the timing was at 20deg. I've never had one act like this before. Does anyone have info on what I'm overlooking?

if you set the timing light to 10* you should then bring the marks to 0

or set the light to 0* and then bring the marks to 10...one or the other.

I guess I forgot to mention that I did that. (I set the light on 10 and aligned the pointer to 0) then when I reconnected the spout and checked it I got 20 with the light set to 0 and 0 with the light set on 20.

ok you did it right. pulling the spout connector takes the computer out and allows you to set base timing which should be 10*btdc. then once you put the spout back in the computer will make its adjustments from there. it will show 20 or so, dont worry.

Ok! That's kind of what I was thinking. If I'm thinking straight and set the Base timing at 0 then when I connect the spout it would show me 10 deg. I guess the best thing to do now is a road test and see how it responds under load.

Thanks

man your not listening. you pull the spout, set base timing to 10*btdc. shutdown motor and plug spout back in and your done. if you check the timing after it will show advanced because the computer takes over from there.

its similar to back in the carb days when you plugged the vacum port on the distributor. if you didnt and turned the dizzy as vacumed increased it would actually advance the timing more.
