Hey all, I have a '02 F-250 SD and noticed that the power steering is making a metallic scraping sound when turning. I quickly made sure there was plenty of fluid in reservoir. Need some ideas or other troubleshooting pointers? Thanks!
If your turning while at a dead stop, your probably straining the pump. It's not that uncommon with oversized tires. If it's doing that while your moving, re-tighten the pump bolts, the pulley could be scraping the bracket under load. Otherwise, it may be time to replace some parts.

I have a 02 F-350 and I had the P/S pump replaced under warranty after it just stopped working correctly.
I have had no issues since.
it happened about a year ago, truck had 100K miles
Here are a couple of things to check. When checking your fluid smell it to see if it smells burned. If so, most repair shops offer power steering fluid flushes where they flush the old fluid and deposits out of the pump. This generally cost about $100 and helps to extend the life of the pump.
I know this sounds strange but check your ball joints. My last two trucks made this noise when the ball joints where bad. Hope this helps
