Hope someone can help, I found that my shift cable for my 92 aerostar is broken. I was able to pull half of the cable out of the sheathing at the transmission where the it hooks to the little ball on the shift linkeage.
My question is, does anyone know where to get one and how do I replace it? Do I have to replace just the cable and end parts or do I have to rip out the whole thing, sheathing and all and run a new one from the steering column down to the tranny??? My Chiltons does not show anything on this at all.
Also where could I find more info on this procedure??? Thanks bunches, I have always found good info and help here.
Floor mounted shifters (like mine) are really easy to replace. Not sure about column mounted shifters. I an exact replacement from partsamerica.com (Checker,Kragen, Advance Auto, etc stores)
Ok I found a cable at the salvage yard, in fact got 2 for much less then a new one from the dealer. Question is, does anyone know if or how I should adjust this cable once I get it installed. I know I will install it with the vehicle in park, but if it does not shift right, how do you adjust it, the shift selector cable??
I have never had to do this on my Aero however I have had to do this on another car.
Usually there is an adjusting mechanism on the shifter assembly which connects the cable to the shifter to adjust the position of the stick to the position of the mechanism on the tranny.
