Just for the hell of it, I tried the VIN decoder on here. It says my VIN is not valid can anyone help. It is 2RH17F577. I also checked the VIN listings in the LMC catalog, for 1/2 ton etc, and it doesnt match up with any of those either. Whats up with that? Does anyone know whats going on?
Instead of the vin, you listed the cowl stamping - mfg code for color, plant, date and unit number.
Vermillion, Richmond CA, 17 June, and unit 577 at that plant.
Your vin will be 98RC 123456 or 97HC 123456 on the firewall data tag, the glovebox door or the frame rail near the motormount - either pass side or driver side.
Well, no luck on finding the VIN anywhere. I checked the outside of the frame on both side to no avail. It wouldnt be on the inside of the frame would it? And that code I listed is stamped on the cowl, and on a plate inside the drivers side door jam. If the VIN isnt on the truck anywhere, where can I find it. The cowl stamp is what is listed on the title from the previous owner also, so no luck there. Guess I'm out of luck....maybe.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. Check on the top of the frame rail just behind the engine mount crossmembers (the angled things behind the radiator) They're lightly stamped and you may have to clean off a bunch of crud and may have to use a light shining at an angle to spot them.
There should be a * (star) followed by the vin with a second * at the end of the string.
Your truck is registered by the actual serial number. Is that the number you listed? According to my source, the serial number is located on the frame rail where the steering box mounts.
