Question on VIN
I recently purchased a project car, a 1948 Ford coupe. One of the previous
owners indicated on the firewall (with paint) the VIN. It sounds
correct...begins with 899A-...
However, the Title says the VIN is RC########. I checked with the DMVs in both
Ill and Wisc, and they have no idea. Any clues? I have no reason to believe
that the person I bought it from sold me something different than what he had.
I also am trying to find the VIN on the frame, but can't so far.I recently purchased a project car, a 1948 Ford coupe. One of the previous

If it was an 8 cylinder car, the VIN should start with 899A - then more numeric digits. The first car was #1984859.
If it was a 6, the VIN should start with 87HA - and the first car was #0536."
hope this helps...
Vehicles in those pre 1949 days were registered by the serial/engine number.
From 1949, the Serial Number/Vehicle Identification Number was the same. Cars were no longer registered by the (serial) engine number.
