1997 F250HD diff fluid??

Changed the differential fluid in my 250. I put in 80-90w HD gear oil. I read in the haynes manual "hypoid gear oil" On the back of the bottle I bought it says "Protects hypoids" . This oil ok? I hope so b/c I already put it in.

I believe I have a limited slip, so I need to add some additive. After this she should be good to go right?

Most light duty vehicle diffs are hypoid if I recall. So the fluid you have should work.

Depending on whether you have clutch chatter, you might need limited slip additive, usually comes in a big toothpaste tube. Usually 8oz is enough for my Sterling diff. Add jsut enough until the chatter goes away. Too much and the diff slips too mugh and you become one legged.

You can test for chatter by making slow speed tight turns. I find backing up and turning tight like from a parking space will tell you if you got chatter or not. Feels like the tires are rubbing and catching on the wheel wells.

Good Luck,

If it says GL-5 on the bottle, its hypoid oil. All car and light duty truck rear axles (and 4x4 fronts) have been hypoid at least since the 1950's. Because of hypoid geometry, tooth contact pressures are high and extreme pressure additives need to be present in the oil. The reason it smells so bad is the presence of sulfur-based EP additives.
