alrighty, my buddy 01 350 tranny over heating, would it have the diode, if so or if not, what does the diode do and where is it.
Dunno. The diode is IN the trans. You won't know till you tear it apart. Below is some reading. When my diode locked up, it felt like someone had hit the E-brake and it won't go past 2nd gear. Also 2 mins after it happened, trans fluid is black and burnt.
The 2001 Models built for August 2000 to March 2001 are the ones with a mechanical diode, all other models have a 34 element sprag from the factory. All Monster Boxes, irregardless of year are built with the 45 element sprag assembly. A mechanical diode is one form of a one way clutch. When the E4OD came out in 1989, it had a sprag one way clutch on the top of the direct drum, and it worked great for 12 years. So Ford in 2001 changed it to the mechanical diode, which didn't work great and after literally 8 days, they realized it was not going to work. The only problem was that all the tooling for the original sprag was destroyed already and it took Ford 6 months to get new machines to go back to the way that they always were. The units built during those 6 months are the diode units. The diode has a different clutch plate pattern, different direct drum and an integral race. To replace one with a sprag, you need to replace all these parts.
thanks aklim, hummm, doesnt sound like it would cause speratic over heating issues, just go bad and roast the tranny. but thanks, the dates are helpful.
Sporadic overheating can sometimes be caused by the bypass sticking or a restriction in the lines to the cooler causing the line pressure to rise and the fluid to use the bypass
the bypass valve would have been my guess, and still may be, though he just had it replaced about 6 months ago because it stuck closed and overheated, he then told me there was a TSB out for his particular year and ford replaced it under his extended warranty.
