Theres some sort of metallic grinding in the engine compartment, I'm thinking its coming from the alternator. Checked current and its in spec so apparently alternator is good.
could be the bearings going in the alternator or one of the other belt driven devices. if it is it wont go much further. check it out and replace what ever is making the noise
Take the belt off and spin everything by hand. You should be able to tell pretty easily. The smog pump will make some noise by hand so don't replace it right away unless you're sure. If everything seems alright try the fan clutch. I had one go bad and I went nuts trying to figure it out until I took the fan off and spun the clutch by hand.
I had an A/C compressor do this and a clutch fan... Either way no matter what it turns out to be it ain't got much longer until total failure of the item as previously stated...
I seen a fan fail and take out the radiator...

The idler pulley's both can go bad. The one on arm and the stationary one. Both are cheap . Take belt loose and check alt ,pulleys ,and smog pump for play or binding. For me if its Not the alt bearings its the pulley.
I dont know if this is related to the grinding problem, but going out to the truck to go into town, apparently I lost power somehow while the truck was parked (radio presets disappeared). Also, the trucks been known on occasion to have the battery dummy gauge fluctuate back and forth from L to the R/M in normal when the trucks in park/neutral.
