Chips do any good on older EFI?

I've heard that the early EFI modules would defeat the in-harness type of "chips" that were available. I have a 351 from a '91 Bronco in my '86 F150 and rather than change the computer to the "91 I am wondering if a chip upgrade would be more beneficial and cost effective. I, also, added a 3" exhaust but no other mods.....yet.

Comments????

John: Your best bet would be to get the correct ecu first. The ecu's are available from several sources, fairly inexpensive, Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, and check with other parts dealers, most sell Ford ecu's. You really need to get the correct ecu, a chip will not change the operating parameters enough to make the engine perform correctly.
