I have a 1988 4x4 4.9l with 5-speed manual and the shifter is really sloppy now. I took it apart and noticed that the pins that are in the top cover that keep the shifter ball in place have worn out. I went to ford and tried to buy some new ones but they say that they can get them. I found a person on ebay that sells a shifter repair kit and I bought it. The pins look different. I don't have a picture or I would post it up. I just replaced the clutch and now I can't drive it because I have to search for the gears. Has anyone had this problem and had the pins fixed? What did you do?
My 90 has the same problem, and I think the same trans. I went to a local rebuilder and got a set of good used pins. Ford does not service the pins seperatly from the top cover-go figure. The part that wears the most is not available seperate. Make sure the holes in the tower are not elongated from wear.
I'm surprised those pins are worn. I thought the shifter ball was surrounded by two black plastic bushings. The bushings have two notches in them so they are held in place by those pins. The plastic bushings do crack. I think the pic. shows them as 104 and 106.
I am the second owner of my truck and I know the previous person never touched it but I did not have 102,103,104,106,107,109 in my transmission. The original pins look like they are tapered. The pins that came in my kit are striaght with a flat head. And the kit came with the big teflon washers that you mentioned earlier (104,106). I'm going to try and put it together this weekend. Hoepfully all goes well and the pins work.
