Torque convertor recommendations?
Engine will be:
'78 460 ~8.5:1
Mildly ported D3 heads
Edelbrock Performer
Holley 750
Comp XE262H
Headers w/ 2 1/4 duals
I'm expecting torque peak somewhere around 2800 rpm and hp at or just below 5000.
Basically, this will be an all-purpose daily driver... I want to be able to tow 6-7000 pounds reliably, potentially long distances. I'd also like to be able to take it to the drag strip once in a while and have some fun (hopefully somewhere in the mid-14 second range?)
Just looking at Summit's selection, I like the TCI Sizzler 1700 rpm convertor, and the TCI "High Torque Towing" 1200 rpm convertor. I think something in the 1700 rpm range would be ideal, but at the same time I'm worried that a "street/strip" convertor wouldn't last too long towing any kind of significant load. Do you guys think a convertor rated at 1200 is too tight for that cam? For comparison, what does a stock convertor stall at?
Thanks guys
I wouldn't go any tighter than 1,800rpm stall.
