What year did Ford start using overdrive transmisions in the F250 and F350 diesel's? Im looking for my first diesel and want extended or crew cab 4x4 and overdrive. Just to pull a boat, go to dump, maybe some camping, but has to make a 300+ mile one way trip to visit my cousin. So I really want one with overdrive so I can cruise at 70 on the freeway.
Depends on whether you want standard (ZF5) or automatic (E4OD)
I believe the standards (ZF5) OD trannies came out around 87'/88'.
The first automatic (E4OD) came out in 89'.
Be careful the first E40D's had a lot of issues that required some serious repairs. I would stay away from any E4OD that was built before 1993 unless it has already been upgraded.
I know Chevy had problems when they first came out with their 4 speed auto the 700-R4. Wonder why these companies had problems with building an OD tranny?
