bad injector?

94 f-250 IDI w/ turbo
Ok I'm still in the learning stage with diesels so bear with me. Tues I hopped in my truck to go to work, started it and it started fine. After a few seconds though it started to surge and then to sputter like it was going to stall, surge and sputter for about 10 seconds or so. It smoothed out and idled fine. I was late for work as it was so I just took off and hoped for the best. Ran fine all day, and hasn't done it again. Seems to be fine now. A friend of mine who knows more about diesels than I do suggested I may have a bad injector, while I don't doubt his knowledge I would have thought there would have been some smoke at start up, if my injector had gone, or the problem would have persisted, neither has happened. I just replaced the fuel filter 6 weeks ago, and I am using good diesel with a healthy does of Power Service, any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a classic air leak. How tight did you tighten the fuel filter? Any leaks by the filter assy? Are your return lines still painted gray? If it kept running fine without adding fuel it would seem to rule out the 1/4 tank pickup tube problem at the tank.

The fuel filter is good, and there are no leaks around the assembly, and yes they are still painted gray, maybe a return line leak due to age? Thanks

texas7816,
There will be others who can comment better than I, but I'd say pick up a return line kit from www.mwfi.com or www.o-f-i.com or http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm <$40 if I recall. There are directions in the tech articles I think, or PLC will be by to paste the explicit instructions. Vaseline on the orings, one side at a time etc.

The others may shoot down my initial diagnosis of it being an air leak too....who knows?

You may want to give that fuel filter a little extra snug-up with a filter/strap wrench too. Air will leak out where fuel will not so it could still be leaking there. This site has a great amount of info on our IDIs including full diagrams of the fuel filter where leaks can/will occur: http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm
