'79 steering 'conversion' question

Hey guys- please set me straight on this.. Is it that some guys will take the '78/79 F250 4x4 power steering box OUT of that truck and swap in a '78/79 F250 2-wheel drive P.S. box?. Do I have that right? Sounds simple enough, but I'm new to 4x4's... what's the purpose/gain? A truck I might buy has the 'stock' '79 F250 4x4 power steering setup (dana 44), and I'm trying set my build budget on whether or not I've gotta sink $$ into a steering upgrade- what's the flaw w/ the stock setup?.. Does any of this make sense, or have I got it all wrong? Thanks for your insight.

If it is a '79, then it already has the intgeral steering. Only 73-77 1/2 owners would want to swap later steering because the power ram-assist steering found on earlier years were bad.
