I just replaced the heads on my 91 f150, 302 The book states to replace with longer or shorter rods depending on the measurements taken. This is new to me so im guessing i will run either all longer or all shorter rods as needed i cant imagine running shorter and longer on the same head....can anyone lead me in the right direction or any easy ideas as to how to adjust the heads i have on the truck now. I have spark and gas...but dosent pop over and run.
Are you sure you put the dist. back in correctly and have the wires laid out in the proper sequence around the cap ? Did you try a lil' raw fuel down the intake to see if it would pop over ?

I'm sure I'm the right thread.....he just did a head replacement........he may have removed the dist.........he definantly had all the plug wires off.......just trying to get some more info....

it seems to me that every question he asked was about adjusting the valve train. and your answers just did not fit.
I am not familiar enough with this to answer your questions completely, but I think it is possible that you could use both shorter and longer push rods on the same head to set the proper "preload" on your lifters. On older engines the preload was measured with a dial indicator mounted over each rocker arm and the longer or shorter push rod is used to bring it within specs. Hopefully some of the other posters can give you more details.
In order to do the heads i had to take the motor down to the block....i removed the distributor, all wires and plugs...i labeled each and every wire, vacuum line and hose i had to remove to take upper and lower intakes off and heads....cap was numbered with all cylinders to make it easier to run the wires. After assembly i went to turn the truck over and had nothing...starter engaged but it wouldnt pop....checked coil and wires to make sure i have spark. Next i checked fuel pump, inertia cut off switch just incase. Preassure relief valve sprays gas and injectors have power going to them. NO 1 was put to TDC and zeroed out on balancer and dropped distributor...had nothing...my next step is to figure out how to adjust valves but the book says to use a bleeder tool for rocker arms....and if not in spec to replace with longer or shorter rods as needed....im a rookie at this so im wondering if its possible to run longer and shorter rods on the same head or will they be all the same lengths....any ideas?
Rotor was pointing at number 1 on the cap when i did timing.....tried raw gas with a spray bottle in upper air intake to see if it would pop or do anything...got a slight pop, nothing to make it run....if the valves arent adjusted right or too tight, when i installed the rocker arms and new pushrods...which were stock for vehicle i made sure rods were seated and lubed...and torqued them down not knowing i would need to adjust the valves again..my mistake....i need help or input on how to adjust the valves.
