today i was pulling a hay wagon and had my chip at the 65 setting. the temps reached 190 and then the o/d light started to flash and will not stop. the fluid is burnt and i know i have to change it. it does seem to shift a little harder now. what ami looking at here. it was not at 190 for long... 10 minutes, then i pulled in and shut it off for the rest of the day. is the tranny toast, or can i still save it?
Flashing O/D light I believe is slipping torgue convertor warning. 190 in temps isnt bad, i run 215-225 pullin my horses on a hot summer day. No probs yet but I hear anything over 230 is a little high
take it to a trans shop and have them do a scan for trans codes. they will be able to tell ya exactly. or if you can run and scan codes yourself then do so and post the codes up and we'll tell ya whats goin down. I would probably do a trans flush, new filter and a big cooler if you havent already. Good luck!
I remember this happened to me when I had my '93 IDI. It flashed for 16 times and then would stop and then start flashing again. My tach didn't work either and the sensor was out. But you need to go to a tranny shop or the dealer to get the codes read.
There's a few things that will make the OD light flash. This one seems to be the most common. Remove the VSS on the top of the rear axle and clean the crud off it. Pull #9 fuse under the hood (resets PCM), see if it comes back. Check the wiring on the VSS too. It's actually called a RABS (Rear Antilock Brake Sensor). The trans will shift very hard while the light is flashing, it sensed slippage and turns up the pressures inside the tranny in an attempt to save itself from damage. New fluid and filter in the tranny is always a good idea.
