i own an 86' F-150 with 5.0, for some reason it just wont start. it died about 2 months ago and i cant get it running. it had previous wiring problems and one day just died after i hit a bump on a trail. after many times trying to start it with no success, we tried to pull-start it. it caught fire when we tried that. the cab and engine bay filled with smoke. that came from a ground wire from the block to the body due to the pos wire from my winch burning through and making contact with the body. but the truck still wont start. im getting no spark from the coil( which is brand new ) and have already replaced the ignition module. i pulled the computer out but it doesnst appear to be damaged( burn marks, smell ) is there any way to test it or might my problem be elsewhere? everything else in the truck works but it wont run and i dont have any other ideas. thanx for all the help!!
Since you were having wiring problems, I would start by making sure you have power to all the important stuff.
Look at the top of the diagram to the right. There is a fusible link feeding a yellow wire which feeds the eec relay and terminal #1 on the computer. Make sure it has power on the yellow wire.
With the key on, make sure the relay clicks, and there is power on the red wire and on the red wire going to pin #37.
Any other fusible links over at the starter relay area, make sure they are not burnt in two. The fusible links are the colored rubber things in the wiring.
well, the diagram is a big help, but nothing worked. i checked all the fusible links and they were all good. i could also hear the relay click when i turned the key. the yellow wire to #1 and the red wire to #37 both had power. one thing that i am seeing is that the "fasten seat belt" light only comes on after the battery is disconnected and then reconnected and will only come on one time after that. u can turn to the key off and then back on and the light doesnt activate until the battery is reconnected
The computer can not stop you from getting spark, only fuel.
Check the wires at the Ignition coil plug.
Take a look at this link, I can read this one a little better. http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...on/8650IGN.jpg
with that in mind, what would stop me from getting spark? i have power to the ignition module and a replaced the coil but im getting nothing. can i test the coil like i would a spark plug wire, using a screwdriver. or should i just start replacing everything in my ignition?
If you are getting 12V at the Coil and Module while cranking and you replaced the Coil and the Module then the only thing that is left other than the wiring is the distributor armature. The distributor armature or vane switch is an encapsulated package consisting of a Hall effect device (switch) on one side and a permanent magnet on the other side. When a vane passes between the magnet and the Hall effect device it generates a PIP pulse that the Ignition Module uses to signal the coil to fire. After the engine is running the Computer uses the PIP to adjust the timing by way of the SPOUT.
well, i completely replaced the distributor and i still got nothing. its not even trying to start. what im thinking now is should i try and replace the whole wiring harness?? if so , where can i get one. theres a couple of junk yards out here, ive looked online but i havent found any.
Take a test light and ground one end to the engine block and test the small wires at the Ignition Coil while the engine is cranking. One side should be hot and the other side should flash (be blinking).
