1968 Resto Project

Ok guys, kinda new to this forum, usually hang out in the '87 threads. My dad has a 1968 F250 Camper special with a 390 in it that has been sitting for I don't know, 10-15 years or so.... I would like to fix it up for him and suprise him one day with the keys to his again running pickup.

Right now there is fire extinguisher powder crap on top of the engine from the last time he tried to do something with it and had a small fire. Now wires were burnt, but its now covered in 6 year old fire extinguisher crap that I have no idea how to get off....ideas???

I know the basics: New plugs, wires, oil, antifreeze, trans fluid, I would like to throw in an electronic distributor to get rid of the old points-style, coil, cap, rotor, battery..........What else would help this go smoothly? Hopefully you guys can give me some tips....appreciate all the help in advance.

Rebuild carb, check or replace fuel pump, rebuild dizzy /vacuum advance then add a Crane XR3000 w/PS91 coil. JMO's without going over the top with the green.

getting a new carb for it.....old one is shot and too much work to fix......do they sell dizzy rebuild kits? how do I check the fuel pump, just turn the engine over and see if fuel comes out?

already has dual exhaust, but not headers.....engine was running when he parked it all those years ago

Get the carb and ignition squared away, once running you can check fuel pressure and volume. A leaking / failing pump diaphragm will leak gas into your oil, feel lucky on old parts failing later on?

On your fire extinguisher residue I'd suggest washing it off with a garden hose or a pressure washer if you have access to one. After you get it washed down dry it off as best you can ( compressed air works nicely) as a lot of the chemicals used in fire bottles are pretty corrosive when wet.Hope this helps.

thanks for that.....got the crap off of the top of the engine, just needs a small shot of paint and she oughta look nice again...

Gotta new carb coming tomorrow to pick up, and a points eliminator kit, as well as plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, antifreeze, water, rad hoses.....like you said, get her running then worry about the other stuff. Any other ideas are helpful, so don't short out on me...thanks
