Need opinions...

Ok, well I got into a small fender bender (not my fault) and well long story short, the guy took off and now im stuck with either fixing it myself or paying my deductible (1000 dollars) so I'm trying to price some parts (bumper, fender, bumper cover) so here comes my question.

is there any cons to buying aftermarket parts? or should I just stick to OEM?

TIA

-Junior

Sorry about your truck. That sucks.

I would stick with OEM parts. Some of the body panels I have seen out of Asian countries leave a lot to be desired.

You have $1000 deductible on your Uninsured Motorist?

Well to be honest with you, I didnt know I had to pay a deductible on uninsured motorist/hit and run... but I think I'm going to change that to either 500 or 250

That would be a shock to me also, I thought that portion of the insurance didn't have a deductible.

My uninsured motorist policy does not look at the deductible. Are you sure that yours does?

It is for just such occasions where some yo yo isn't insured and can't pay for relatively light damage which would fall under your normal deductible.

Check your agent. My State Farm policy does cover accidents like yours without deductible.

Good Luck,

Under some policies UMPD (uninsured motorist property damage) is an endorsement that is attached to collision, meaning you have to have collision to have umpd. In that case a lot of the times the endorsement (or umpd coverage) lowers your deductible. For example, you'd have a $1000 collision deductible with $500 umpd deductible. You'd have a collision claim, and when it was confirmed it was an uninsured motorist the deductible would change to $500 or $500 would be applied to the $1000 collision deductible. That's only one of many ways it can be done, and it will vary based on the insurer.

Also, a lot of the time the UMPD deductible is lower than the collision deductible, doesn't have to be, and it's something you ask for when you purchase a policy, so it's the customer's responsibility to know their coverage and what they purchased. If your UMPD deductible is higher than your collision deductible then it really doesn't help much. For example, if you have a $500 collision deductible and a $1000 UMPD deductible, what would be the point of carrying UMPD coverage?

I've never seen or heard of a UMPD coverage that didn't have a deductible, but there certainly could be companies writing those policies. Also, insurance is typically regulated at the state level, so every state will have specific requirements that may be different than the next state.

To address your part questions. Aftermarket parts can be certified to meet OEM standards. Look for aftermarket parts that are CAPA certified http://www.capacertified.org/home.asp

I think it looks like more than $1000 in damage, if you use new/oem parts; however that still means you'd be paying $1000 toward the repair. I think I'd get an estimate from a reputable shop first, and then decide whether to report it to your insurance carrier, and then realize the insurance company may use aftermarket parts or used parts depending on their repair obligation.

My State Farm policy has a $1000 deductible on most stuff. For uninsured I am fully covered, NO deductable.

But like the guy said depends on your insurer and policy.

I don't recall discussing what policy I needed with my agent he just wrote it up. Paid off since I had a similar problem with uninsured person on a $600 accident a few months back.

You will be amazed at how much a tiny dent can cost to fix. I bet yours will be more, you got a busted light, maybe a couple hundred, A bent Bumper, wild guess $500, if that egg crate plastic under the bumper is busted probably closer to $800+. The fender wild guess needs replacement $500+?? Paint $300+??. Would not be surprised if we are talking $2000+ easy. My wife has creased a side panel 3 times same dang place!!!, and each time it was about $1500. Yours looks way worse.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Ok, well I called my Insurance Co. and they said that the reason I'm being charge a deductible is because i didnt give them any info on the other vehicle (i.e. license plate #) So I guess I'm screwed in paying the deductible.
BTW... I went to a reputable bodyshop to get an estimate, and well... it all came out to be ....3851.90 dollars
