I just took removed mine. I think my 85 is the same as yours. I used an inspection mirror and saw that there is a retaining clip in the back of the ****. I put pressure on this and the **** came off of the shaft. Once the **** is remove you have access to the shaft and nut. take the nut off and you should be able to pull the switch out from the back. Make sure you are carefull when removing the wires. the connectors on mine were brittle. good luck.

roving wiper switch?
My 84 must not be exact as your 85.No way could I see behind **** with any thing as it is recessed a little.Mine is an XLT if that matters? Not even sure I can get my hand up under dash do anything from back side.Will try later again.Just hope some one knows the trick on this. Later,JW Miller

I have an '84 XL and mine were a pain in the butt to get off at first. You really need something small with a curved end to get to the clip. Even then, it is a PITA to get off initially. Once I figured it out (had to move it around to just the right spot and then pry the clip while pulling the ****), I could take mine off much easier, but it took some time to get the hang of it.
