push button 4x4 issues

what are some common troubleshooting tips for push button 4x4 not working?

If you have automatic hubs one may have failed. If it has not been put in 4L in awhile the electric shift motor may be sluggish. Put transmission in neutral, press 4H, let it shift, 4L let it shift, then keep pressing buttons for a minute or two. Wait at least 30 minutes to let the motor cool and try it again and it may free up. Try a search as much has been written about electric shift motor.

You can just pull the motor off and leave the wires plugged in. Have someone push the buttons and see if it turns. While its off you can turn the shaft with a visegrip to see if the transfer case is working.
