Lost Oil Pressure

I have a 94 F150 with a 5.0. It was a good deal so I picked it up about 6 months ago. 3 weeks ago I replaced the oil pan (rotted out) and all went well. I noticed it was leaking last week but it was only a few drops so I let it go for a bit (I'm busy with work at the moment).

Today, I get on the highway and I lose all oil pressure at the gauge. I stop at a gas station and check the oil....its low but not empty. I add 3 litres and re-start. Still no oil pressure. I'm thinking at the time its just a sending unit because I know it has oil.

I drive 9 miles to my destination and can hear the dreaded "tick-tick-tick". Not running hot, no loss in power and no white smoke out the exhaust.

I just left it where it was for the moment. Any ideas what to expect? Its got 160,000 km on it (approx 100,000 miles). Just wondering what everyone thinks I should be looking for in terms of what exactly happend and more importantly what will be wrong...

Glenn

Well hopefully it is just the sending unit malfunctioning and you still have oil pressure. I would screw in a mechanical pressure gauge in place of the oil sender and start the engine to see if there really is pressure.
A common cause of oil pressure loss on Fords is a chunk of something getting into the oil pump, jamming it and causing the oil pump drive (that long hexagonal rod) to twist up and break.

Did you by chance use silicone on the oil pan gasket when you replaced it?

If it did run without oil I would guess that the rings and bearings are damaged and need to be replaced.

That's why I asked about silicone. I've purchased two core motors which had been done in by silicone. One had a glob of the dreaded orange scourge holding the oil pressure relief valve open, the other had a piece clogging a con rod oil hole.
The former engine was rebuildable (in fact it appeared to have just recently been rebuilt) while the latter suffered from a burnt up rod journal, thrown rod and holey block.

What happens is excess silicone gets squoze out from the gasket area and forms drops which cure and fall into the oil. They are rubbery and so eventually get through the oil pickup screen, then get stuck in something.

I have a truck that did the exact same thing. 94 f-150 with a 5.o. Except, when i got off the freeway and shut it down to check the oil (which was fine). My oil pressure was back when i restarted it and was normal for anoter 20 miles. Then it did it again. But was fine when i shut it down for a minute. I thought it was the sending unit so i ignored it. Then got a tick. I shut it down and restarted it and the oil pressure cameback and the tick went away. What the hell is wrong with mine????
