1994 F150 302 AOD 4x4. 3.55 gears and 32" tires. It's underpowered and won't maintain speed on the highway, the slightest hill downshifts out of overdrive. The engine is only running about 1500rpm at 60mph. Will a chip help me out much? I read a posting by ken about a 95 f150 302 and he said a chip would make a noticeable difference. My other question, is there much difference between a hypertech chip and superchip. I know where to buy a used hypertech chip for my truck cheap. The problem is based on the postings I feel more confident with superchip or Diablo.
Part of the problem is the tire size you're using. 32" are pretty big tires for a 302 running 3.55 in overdrive.
A chip will help, but don't expect a miracle. 32" tires is a lot to overcome. I've chipped several 92-94 302 V8 trucks in the last 4 weeks. The results have been mixed. 4 people loved their chip, one said he felt no difference. He was running a 4x4 302 with 165,000 miles. My guess is that his engine is worn out.
I think you'll find that buying the used Hypertech (or any brand, such as Superchips or Diablo) is going to cost you just was much as a new one. The used chip will have to be reflashed for your truck's ECU and a dealer will charge you to do that.
I can't give you an answer about the differences between the chip, other than what Hypertech says on their site because I have no personal experience with them.
