I really dont think so. I've been told that the new cummins and durmax is much quiter than powerstroke. Its just not so. I've been hauling hay from outta state for my cattle. Yesterday I got the chance to see "hear" a thunderroad cummmings. I know why they call it a thunderroad. Its loud. I'll admit that the durmax it tuned down a small bit inside the cab but thats it. Guys tell me they dont even know when their cummings or dmaxs are running and of course I being exiled always says "your either full of _______ or you are deaf.
All the newer generation trucks from all 3 are getting quieter w/ each newer version. I could here a Cummins (one of the older 12-valve "dirty dozens") that was sitting two vehicles back (a car was between us) at a red light. I thought my X had suddenly started idling louder!
The 7.3 was louder than the 6.0 and the new 6.4 seems even more quite than the 6.0.
The DMax is way more quiet than the old GM diesel.
Between the new technologies for injectors/pumps and the new EPA regs coming in to play, you'll likely see diesels that are even more silent in the future...that is until we MOD them to make them sound like a REAL diesel!!!!
Quietness has to do with success in applying pilot injection, which Duramax (Isuzu) and I think Cummins, has had. Navistar supplied original 6.0's back in '03 with pilot injection. It subsequently was removed with a 'flash' because of injector durability problems. The 6.0 Powerstroke is louder than D'max or the new Cummins. I haven't heard a new 6.4L, but maybe they're as quiet also.
And that's a sweet thing! What better sound to hear of a truck than an '03 Power Stroke fire-up? The answer is, that same '03 roaring past dodge and chevy diesels as their bewildered occupant(s) gawk-with-awe at the site and of the SOUND of what they could have owned... If only... If only...

No its not. I"m telling ya not asking, that new cummings is not quiter than my powerstroke. I'm not guessing here. I worked right beside one yesterday. There is nothing quite about the cummins. That dmax is little quieter inside the cab but I cant tell a difference outside the truck.
Last August, when I bought my first Powerstoke. I looked at all diesels. Ford was without a doubt in my opinion the loudest... both at idle and running down the road. Duramax was the quietest (poor *******s). You could hardly tell the Duramax was a diesel. I can always tell when a Powerstroke is coming down the road and love the sound. I understand the 2008 is a completely different story.

Now you've done it. You're gonna offend him again.....

All trucks in this summary being stock and standing outside the cab, the 7.3L Powerstrokes and the Cummins 12V and 24V pre-common rail were way louder than the Duramax ever was and both had to be turned off at 99.9% of fast food drive thru's. When the Cummins went common rail, they were on par with the Duramax's as far as quietness. The 6.0L is way louder than the last year model 5.9L Cummins and Duramax. The new 6.7L Cummins, LMM Duramax and 6.4L Powerstroke are pretty close right now, but i still give the loudest award to the 6.4L Powerstroke by a hair. I think it is a tad bit louder than the newest offerings from the other two. And i mean the smallest hair. Hope this helps.
My experience with fast food Drive Thru's (9 out of every 10 times through a drive thru for me with trucks i have driven and what the first thing that was said to me)
1996 F-250 7.3L Powerstroke (Please turn your truck off sir!!!!)
1998 Dodge 3500 12V Cummins (Please turn your truck off sir!!!!)
2001 F-250 7.3L Powerstroke (Please turn your truck off sir!!!!)
2002 GMC 2500 LB7 Duramax (Would you like to try a value meal today.)
2003 F-250 6.0L Powerstroke (Would you like... you are going to have to turn the truck off sir!!!)
2004 Dodge 2500 Cummins common rail (Go ahead with your order.)
2006 GMC 2500 LBZ Duramax (Hi, welcome to McDonald's may i take your order.)
2006 F-250 6.0L Powerstroke (Turn your truck off and go ahead with your order!)
Just my experiences with the different motors.
P.S. I am really bored right now!
I can hear my 6.0 from over a block away....i dont mind it at all...the only way you can hear it is with the radio off....but who drives with the radio off?
If I wanted a quiet motor, I'd get a gasser! Hearing the hammer mill is music to my ears. I even turn the radio off just to listen to it sometimes. I think I need therapy!

I have to agree here, if noise was a problem then I'd buy a real Cadillac not a Cowboy cadillac.
I have no problem with the noise. The first thing I've always done to my gassers was to cut out the mufflers and run straight pipes. I like loud trucks. My focus here is after the xbrand owners that I run into come to conclusion that they cant out work the powerstroke they jump on this noise trip. My neibor has an 07 dmax. His biggest problem with his truck right now is having to turn it off at drive thrus. Oh yea I forgot thats not suppose to happen. I'll admit I dont know the inner workings of the cummings and dmax but I've been beside them. I guess I can just hear what others dont.

Yea, you're definately hearing something Every day I meet my co-worker in the parking lot after work and we let our trucks run for a few minutes before taking off and his 06 Duramax is way more quiet than my truck.
My wife misses our 06 Cummins as you could barely notice that sucker idleing! I for one love the sound of my 6.0L and wouldn't trade it for another dodge truck...
