Concealed sheetmetal treatment

I'm about to weld up the new stake pockets on my 51 Ford but before doing so I want to coat the concealed parts. They're sandblasted and I have a choice of epoxy primer or a zinc based primer. The stake pocket flanges form a lap over the bed side which will then be plug welded through holes drilled in the flanges, Any suggestions on which primer?

Weld-thru primer?

Yes, 3M makes a 'weld thru' primer you can buy at a local body shop supply house. It's designed for just that purpose. It sprays on.
Good luck, Phil

The Weld-Through stuff is the way to go on some of that. The stuff I grabbed out of an industrial welding shop was basically zinc powder suspended in an epoxy liquid all in an aerosol can. The shelf life is less than a year by the way. The only caveat I saw was that it recommended NOT top-coating it. So, I will use it in the areas that won't show like the insides of the cab in the lower corners.

One other thing. That stuff works pretty good when you first use it, but always invert the can and clean the nozzle. It has a LOT of suspended solids and clogs the nozzle fast. If it clogs, it will spit and sputter and make a heck of a mess. I understand that Krylon makes a simular primer, but I have never used it. It's supposed to be cheaper too at about 6 bucks a can. The 3M stuff is closer to $24.

yes, 3m Weld-Thru primer sells for $29 for an aerosol can at Arnold Motor Supply ( my local auto parts place). However, Good luck welding to metal that has this stuff sprayed on it. The weld arc will spit and spatter like you've never seen. The weld puddle doesn't even like to stick to it. I'm trying to use it in concealed areas too... but being careful that I do not have to weld to the metal i'm spraying it on because of the welding problems. Weld - Thru??? I don't know about that.! I'm just using it because it contains zinc and other non-rusting metal materials, so hoping it will curb the major rust for quite some time.
