This is my first post on this site and am hopeing to get some answers to my problem. In the middle of a trip today on the interstate my 2005 screw with a 5.4 began to chug and the check engine light came on. I took the first off ramp that I saw and rolled down the window ont he way down the ramp. I could not hear any funny noises but could smell gas. I pulled into a gas station and tunred the truck off. I checked the fluid levels and for disconneted wires and could find nothing wrong. Looked under the rest of the truck for gas leak but could not see anything. Tried to restart the truck but would not start. Engine acted like it was not getting gas. Had to call the tow truck to come and get me. I am in an unfamiliar state and have no idea of where to take the truck. As the driver was pulling the truck onto the rollback this caused the smell of gas to increase. The driver stopped pulling the truck up the roolback so I could look. There was gas running out of a connection in the exhaust pipe. The truck was being pulled up the rollback tailgate first. I have no ideas of what the problem could be. The truck is sitting at a dealership and will not be looked at until monday. They did give me a service loaner car that I will not have to pay for since the work is being done their so I could finish my trip. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what could be causing the problem. I appreciate the help and will keep all of you posted. Thanks
Without knowing exactly where the exhaust point your talking about is (I assume closer to the engine) it's hard to say where the leak in your fuel system is. Could be a split line, leaky fuel rail, ejected injector...My '01 Expy had an unseated injector and it started leaking fuel down the back of the engine.
I've had mine in twice for chugging and they replaced so far with the 2 times #1, #3,#4 fuel injectors and plugs. I asked them if there was something causing the problem since they are all on the same bank, they said no, they have been having problems with fuel injectors.
It has been about 2 months since and no problems yet. A little info: I started noticing the problem when I stopped at a light, the motor would have a sudden drop and pick back up. I would get worse in the days ahead until it would just start chugging when you try to excellerate. The bonus is I don't have to worry about the plug removal problem that has been going around already having those 3 plugs changed.
Thank you for the ideas. The dealership is suppost to work on it tommorrow. So I should know more and have a little less money. I will let you know what the problem was.
Found out today that the #3and4 fuel injectors were stuck open. Seems odd to me that a vehicle with 40,000 miles on it would have fuel injector problems. This makes me concerened that there may be more problems to come with the truck. I hope not. Thank you again for all of the input.
You're right about that Husker, it is odd. Unfortunately though sometimes stuff happens, that's just the way it is. You could go anouther 150,000 miles and not have any more trouble. Bummer it happened out of warranty, for sure. So what did it end up costing?
It ended up running me $906. That was for the two fuel injectors and plugs along with the 30,000 mile service. The truck was my fathers and he just passed away a little over a month ago and was not sure if he had the 30,000 mile service done. Figured since it was in might as well get the work done. The sad thing was that labor charge was $580. Sure was not a nice check to write.
I hope all of my troubles are behind me. Thank you for the thoughts on my father. I was reading another thread and saw that someone with the same year truck had to have the #7 injector replaced and he paid $760 ( if i remember right). I dont feel so bad for what I paid for the 2 injctors and plugs along with other work.
