There are two different types of conditioners out there for saddle leather(which is what the king ranch is). You have one that is mainly just a cleaner(lexol is the only brand that I know that has that, it is an orange container), you would use that first and then you would use the original neatsfoot leather conditioner oil after that(brown container for lexol, but they do have generic neatsfoot oil as well at most saddle or farm stores, I have used both the named brand and the generic haven't had any problems with either). This should have been done all along as this isn't your normal vehicle leather and requires more care, not really a pita like some would say, but it does take more care to maintain it(i'm used to cleaning 5 saddles a month as it is(3 king ranch ones) so the vehicle seats is no big deal for me). Clean as best you can first and then pour on the neatsfoot let it soak in good, particularly if cracking is an immediate threat. You do have a choice betwen non-darkening and darkening neatsfoot oil, I would go for the darkening as my believe that they took some of the power out of the conditioner when they took out the stuff that darkens the leather, but I also like the looks of a regularly conditioned saddle(and it will be softer then it was when you first got it if you condition it regularly(more if you left it out in the sun for a long time). Be really generous with your application since you are trying to help it after it got pretty used up, and I would highly recommend after that maintaining a conditioning schedule to avoid it in the future.
In discusions w/ the local saddle shop here in Houston they recommeded a different brand, as Lexol is a lower end (but avaiable nationwide) product. If you can get it use Kali Leather Life. If you can't get from them at the following website. Under leather care, page 2.
I looked in to the right cleaner and conditioner to use as well. I went with the Lexol cleaner and the Lexol conditioner. I even called them directly and they recommeded a company on the web that sells it cheap and delivers it cheap.
I was pretty happy with the results, but I can't compare it to another product since this was the first and only one that i have used. The link where I bot it is:
