To Chip . . . Or?

Flip chip or ? My '92 F-150 4X4 (E4OD) was just upgraded [302 to a 351W EFI], stock exhaust manifolds to dual 2 1/2" exhaust w/o CAT, air injection system removed; next upgrade is a FIPK. I tow 30% of the time and run town/highway (Wyoming = hills and mountains) for the balance. I already know that there is a payoff in burning premium vice regular gas (increased mileage, somewhat offset by the increased cost).

Can the chip be programmed for towing/highway options? What real gains should I anticipate from the chip (HP, fuel mileage, enhanced performance due to programming for modified components)? Am I better off installing a shift kit? Anyone experienced with these areas are welcome to reply ( no speeches about the environment necessary - just looking for the best performance & mileage).

You could get an 87/93 octane flip chip. But, generally, towing mileage with a 93 octane chip is way up compared to a non-chipped truck (as compare to a slight increase when not towing). While we can certainly program a Superchips flip chip for this, you may want to hang on for a few weeks for the Diablo "Delta" chip. Superchips has greatly increased the cost of the flip-chip and custom programming. We had to raise the price $75!

The Diablo "Delta" takes the flip-chip concept one step further:

3 settings: 2 programmed codes and stock

Its due in February/early March.

If you're just looking for shifting improvements, by all means go with a shift kit instead of a chip and save your $$$. If you want the added performance of the chip along with shifting improvements then consider if higher octane is worth it, or if you want a flip chip, consider how many miles you drive and how long it will take to recover the gas difference.

What kind of mileage do you get and what's the average fuel cost in your area, both for 87 and 93? Let me know and I'll calculate the $$$ difference and how many miles you'll need to drive to break even.

Also note that we can't program a custom application with the cats removed unless you plan to use it for off-road applications, only standard code. (The EPA has busted diesel shops for doing that!)
