Help with a swap,
n00b here. this may not be exactly a diesel question, but it concerns my '84 F250 6.9L 4x4 extended cab. after wanting a turbo diesel for several years, I finally found the truck I wanted with the right engine. It has the 6.9 with a Hypermax turbo. Also has Gear Vendors under/overdrive on the 4 speed tran. the problem is the body is very rough; rusted out on the rocker panels and all the wheel wells. I have access to an 89 F250 extended cab 2wd with a 5 speed [don't know which one yet] and a clean body. I think I would prefer the 5 spd to the 4, even with the splitter. I don't haul that much. My question is: would it be better to swap the 6.9 into the 89, and add the front-end and transfer case, etc, or to put the 89 body onto the 84 frame, and add the tranny?
I havent' done this kind of stuff before, so either case seems pretty daunting to me.
or should I forget about it, put a flat bed on and use it as is?
2nd question: glow plug light stopped coming on with key. I put a new relay in and it worked the first time only and then stopped again. what's the next step? Should I put in a manual switch?
thanks in advance,
ioruh
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Need a little more info about the 89, if it is a gasoline engine the transmission will not bolt up to a diesel.
As for the glow plugs, the problem is probably the glow plug controller.
The early style system (83 thru 86) was a nightmare to trouble shoot.
Also a common way for it to fail was turn the glow plugs on while driving, burning the glow plugs out.
When replacing the stock glow plug controller, it is common for them to break off, requiring the head to be removed because it screws into the coolant jacket.
That is one of the main reasons manual glow plugs are so common.
