My 82' I6 was running fine, then when I started it up the other day it wouldn't come off from high idle. Normally when I tap the gas pedal it will settle in. Now, it stays at high idle until I put it into gear, and even then it's idling a little faster than normal. And now, of course it's hard to shut off. Any advice would be appreciated. I did a little research here. At first I read that it may be the TPS but I don't think that my truck has one. I don't think that it's a vacuum leak since it happened so fast. It wasn't a gradual build-up. So I'm lost.
Thanks in advance.

Check around the fast idle cam, see if the choke linkage is jammed, twisted, or otherwise bound up causing the fast idle cam to be engaged. Also check that the three screws on the choke hold down plate are tight. If they come loose, the choke can rotate enough to pull up on the fast idle linkage.
Thanks.
I checked the linkage and all seems good. Nothing binding. I'll check the screws tomorrow morning.
Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
The choke is rotating when it warms up. It's completely closed before the truck is started then after starting it slightly opens and gradually opens full.
The fast idle mechanism appararently works OK since you've got fast idle. The choke spring is working since the plate is rotating. The last step is for the fast idle mechanism to release when you tap the throttle. Inspect the relationship between the choke lever thats attached to the choke plate ...and the fast idle mechanism. I think you'll see what's wrong right there.
