I know that the older ones had the power assist, and I did search but no clear answer. Why is the 77.5-79 power steering swap so popular? was the old way unreliable? Or is there some simplicity issue? Just bought an early 77 and she has the old setup. thanks for the info.

If the old set up is in working condition, keep it. My 74 has the assist and it works great even with 39.5 tires. I bought a 79 box on ebay over a year ago with plans to convert, but until the old one quits, I see no reason to change?
I hated the Power Assist on my 75, extremely anxious to get a later gear box to swap in. It leaked like a sieve when I got it, so that might point towards my woes....
In what way is power assist simpler LOL. Is it the 6 PS lines, two rams, separate gear box? I don't understand. What simpler than a Gear Box, a pressure line, a return line....?
I still have the old system on my 76 Highboy but I have replaced the hoses since they started to leak. What seemed to help my truck the most was when I added a steering stabilizer.
I removed all the crap steering components on my 76& replaced the gear box with a 3/4 ton chevy. The valve cylinder is now a tie rod..Steers better than most of my cars....
it is a quicker ratio on the newer boxes. the real reasons that I can think of to swap is for the ratio difference or if you have alot of parts that are bad. I have the ram setup on my 75 and the 79 that I had was the PS setup. I am going to be keeping the ram setup because I want to put 38x15 tires on the truck and I want to keep the turning stress off of the frame and on the axle where I think that it should be. ( I think that the best setup would be to drill a newer box and hook up the old ram system and get rid of the actuator) I would like a quicker ratio though. but it all comes down to prefrence. also, the newer setup is a little more stable at high speeds when turning. the older setup will jump a little cause it is so easy to turn the wheel if you hit a bump or something. (not bumpsteer)
