85 302 efi idle

does anyone know the stock idle rpm's? i know you shouldn't have to adjust it, but the previous owner did to compensate for bad sensors i've replaced and need to get it idling correctly.

thank's, mike

When it's idling, you are supposed to be able to unplug the IAC motor, and the engine should slowly lose rpm and die.

If it keeps running, the idle is set too high. If it dies right away, the the idle stop is not turned in far enough.

You may want to tear the whole throttle body apart and clean it up, and the IAC passages, before trying to set it. Fuel injected engines are famous for the throttle body getting gummed up.

Perfict Idle is 640rpm.

1. Start engine

2. Warm engine to operating temp.

3. Remove the plug on the IAC.

4. Turn the throttle stop screw untill you reach 600rpm.

5. Turn off engine but place key back in on position.

6. Test the TPS. It should read .90, if not adjust it till it does.

7. Reastart engine, is idle still at 600? If yes then continue to step 8. If not repeat 1-7 untill you have 600rpm idle with a .90 reading on the TPS.

8. Reconect IAC.

9. Idle should rise to around 640rpm.

10. Have a beer becouse your idle is now set.

Gacknar, where did you get that procedure? Sounds a lot more exact than the one I got from "How to tune your Ford fuel injection" book.

I tried it today...took apart the throttle body assembly, cleaned all the gunk out, replaced the IAC, and reset everything per Gaknar's post...worked like a charm...truck runs brand new. Or maybe it's just the beer.....

Sounds like setting it that way leaves 40 rpm of control to the IAC. I wonder what is the total rpm range of the IAC? The worst case on the other side of the range is fast idle at cold start.

Thats correct.
Ford shop manuals say to set the base idle at 400rpm. I have found that in the real world setting it at 600rpm gives a little stall coushion to these older vehichles.

The IAC is located on the right side of the thottle body. The TPS is located on the bottom of the throttle body.
