Got a big suprise today when I reached in thru the open window to start the truck. Fired right up. Few minutes latter I realized the keys were still in my pocket. Thought I might not be able to get it into drive, but nope. Drives fine and everything works with no key. Not sure I consider this a problem. Actually it is pretty handy. I case I deceide to fix it, what is broken or worn to cause this?
Frank
Brass gear (D4AZ-3E717-A) that fits below the ignition switch cylinder is stripped. You will also need: D0AZ-3C610-A = Retaining Ring; and D6AZ-3E700-A = Bearing

Quite true, but that pesky brass gear.. Ford coulda engineered it better and made it from a stronger material. 'Course, then they wouldn't sell any, and with it, the related parts. The same gear has been used since 1974! The bearing since 1976, and retainer ring since 1970!!

A buddy with bellsouth told me alot the techs do this intentionaly. How can I strip out mine? I am often in the woods and could easily lose the keys so I wanted to have the "keyless ignition" option imbeded in my truck...

I am still repairing my broken Ignition Actuator .... actually the trying to get everything lined back up is the hard part. That brass gear is easy to get out, but you still need something to engage the actuator to start the truck ... your best bet is to take the tumblers out of the lock assy ... then it will turn freely.
I have had the luck of this allready being done on last 2 trucks You can lock it but if you don't you can remove key. The next one I get I will be swapping the worn out set from parts truck if it dose.

...and be easier to steal. If you're in the desert southwest, your truck will be south of the border, down Mehico way, prolly before you know it's missing!
My 92 Ford company truck does about the same but if I turn the switch to lock I need the key to un lock. Once unlocked I can remove the key. The companies 89 Chevy pu, 2000 Dodge pu, all do the same thing. Pretty nice on the job and ok if you lock your vehicle when unattended.

...you drive to Panama City in your farm truck that wasn't supposed to be on the road because it hadn't been tagged in 5 years, and I, I mean "you", have no insurance, because it's a "farm" truck. You stop to talk to some young church going ladies (during spring break) and you shut the truck off......Forgot the key in the tac house, 80 miles away....And the ignition decides to "work" like it's supposed to...Meanwhile your new friends are all over the manure covered farm truck wanting to roll the strip....And "you" can't get it strated, and have to call you dad...Who brings the bull whip with the key......The bull whip was of course just for motivation to get back to the farm....
anyway, that's of course a complete hypothetical situation that you may or may not ever, or want, to endure.....
