Been having trouble or so I think with my hubs but it hasnt been a real concern until now. I have an 01 250 SD with the ESOF When the hubs are in auto and i turn the switch, it dosent actually seem to be in 4x4, the light says i am, but you can tell the truck isnt. If I get out and switch the hubs to lock and switch the switch its in 4x4. Can anybody shed any light on this situation give me some pointers on what needs fixed?
The next time you have the hubs in Auto and put it in 4 HI, drive for about 100ft to let the hubs lock then get out of the truck and go try to turn the knuckles on the front axle. If they turn then they are not locking, if they dont turn then you are fine. During the winter this year I noticed it took a while for my front axle to lock and start grabbing, also when you drive straight you will not really feel the front tires grabbing in 4HI....only when you are turning will you feel the front tires binding and also when the rear tires are not getting traction.
After you find the problem make sure to drive the truck in 4 wheel drive at least once a month to keep everything lobricated. You may also want to change out the auto hubs for a good set of manual hubs to eliminate future problems with the junk factory hubs.

Actually that won't work, unless his transfer case shift motor is bad too. If his transfer case is in 4x4 the driveshaft and axles will be in gear and he won't be able to turn them by hand.
Like the others said though, if the 4x4 isn't working automatically, but it works if he locks the hubs in manually then it's either a vaccuum leak, vaccuum solenoid, or bad hubs.
Yeah, well he was just saying that he doesnt seem to feel the 4x4 engage in 4HI. If his t-case is locked in 4x4 and his hubs are not locking then I guess the only way to tell is to try and turn the t-case drive shaft and then if it doesnt turn go find a big parking lot and do some tight left\righthand turns and see if he can feel any binding, if no binding but the t-case driveshaft doesnt turn then I guess hes got a t-case problem if he is in 2wd and not 4HI. He needs to clear some things up first, he doesnt specifiy if when he Manually "locks" the hubs weather he can feel it engaging. I thought I read somewhere that 4Hi only transfers like about 25% of the torque to the front tires, and then 4Lo tranfers a 50/50 torque ratio, so technically if you are in 4HI and driving straight you will not be able to feel the front tires grabbing as much as you would feel it in 4Lo.
I took my hubs apart many times and cleaned them, didn't help.
Then when I replaced my knuckle seals at the same time I did the ball joints it is all working as it should.
At least my hubs are well lubed and clean.
