Trans fluid question
According to the owners guide the 4 speed automatic takes Mercon transmission fluid, the 5 speed Torqshift automatic takes Mercon SP.
Here is a link to the Motorcraft site where you can look at your manual.

See chart on page page 255.
It also says, on page 256:
Ensure the correct automatic transmission fluid is used. Transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the end of the dipstick. Check the container to verify the fluid being added is of the correct type. Refer to your scheduled maintenance guide to determine the correct service interval.
So, look at your dipstick.
I went right to the 03 owners guide where it states regular Mercon for the 4 speed (which I'm pretty sure he has with the 7.3L), and Mercon SP for the 5 speed Torqshift (which I am 99% sure only comes with the 6.0L).

This has been a big help.
I checked the dipstick and all it says is to "use mercon" on the handle in fine print so I'd say I was mistaken and it's the 4 speed. Sorry about the mis-information.
I get what seems like 4 distinct shifts and was told it's probably the 5 speed.
I'll double check with a dealer but just to be sure is there any way to tell by the VIN or a difference in the 4/5 speed housings that a quick visual check would show?
Hate to be a pain but with the conflicting opinions from local mechanics (probably because of the 4 to 5 speed difference??) I guess it's best to be sure what trans it has before it's changed. Thanks again

You can use Mercon V or the plain old Mercon in your tranny. You have the 4R100 4 speed auto.
