84 ford pull rig

i got a 1984 ford f350 with the 6.9. it has an ats turbo kit with a custom 3" cool air intake and 4" strait piped stainless exhaust. the truck is a 4spd with a gear vendors under over has 4.10s in the back. I'm pulling a 32" fifth wheel with almost no problems but i dont have hardley any black smoke, on big hills she gets up to about 950 dergees or so but i just thought it should smoke a little more black...the turbo is pushing 9lbs most the time but hits 10 on good days i thought about turning the pump up more but didn t know if more fuel would make it heat up more on the hills or less any help would be great...thanks justin

A 32" trailer? I sure hope you aren't having any issues pulling it... just kidding. I assume it is 32 ft. The safe temp is 1,200 although some say 1,250 is also fine. That is the melting pt of aluminum, but there are oil jets cooling the bottom of the piston. If your pyro probe is in the manifold, 1200 max i'd say, but if it is post turbo, I think 900~ is where they say is safe. Turning up the pump will increase the egts. You seem to have a bit of room to play with. You could also add water/meth injection for more power and to cool egts down...

The only way water meth is bad is if you specify too much water to be injected and it hydrolocks the motor. With a prebuilt kit this will not happen. Actually water meth has been around and was used as a power boost in WWII planes and has been used to keep egts lower on pull tractors. It is beneficial because it only comes on when boost is sensed and/or egts hit a preset limit, and the state change of the water helps scrub the combustion chambers, has a steaming effect, while the methanol provides an additional kick adding a lot of power and torque...On a computer controlled diesel lightly tuned, water meth adds up to 100 hp and 300 tq...

SNow performance, cooling mist, painless performance, DPS performance. The boost only controller can be had from all three with prices around $400. If you want a true 2d boost and egt mapped controller, then it will run around $700...

Smile Water Injection

Hi, I am the owner of that 84 ford pull rig. With alot of money invested in it. Just like all of us we would like more power------But-----Not to blow it up. I do know the cost of that 2x. The new 6.9 has 30,000 and going strong. this rig only pulls. About 10,000 miles a year. I just though some history mite help. Is water injection OK?????????

You will find a lot of guys running water up in the Power Stroke forum.

I pull that kind of weight or more rather often.
I never thought I needed the water though.

I went a different route, milled pistons and bigger boost numbers.

I do know several people had problems running water and removed the system from their trucks.

Question High EGT'S

While pulling these heavy loads. I have had to turn down the IP the get the EGT'S back down where they should be. Where I live we have 6% grades for miles. And when that hammer down for that long things get hot. I have over come alot of this by adding an air scoop to the bottom of my rad. And adding A gear venders Overdrive.(witch helped alot on the flats and small hills.) While I am inpressed on the up grades I gave done so far. I am allways in surch for more power.(safe power) Cold air intake and four inch S.S. exhust has helped. But, I would like to turn my pump back up and out pull the powerstokes up those hills!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You
Jim

I took 40 thousandths off the top of the pistons to lower the base compression ratio from 22.5 to 1 down to 22.25 to 1.
1985 6.9 block bored 30 over, no sleeves.
ARP head studs.
DPS Stage 1 injectors.
94 7.3 turbo IP cranked to the max.
Timing advanced
7.3 inconnel valves
7.3 rockers
ATS turbo cranked to the max
3" exhaust split to twin 3" stacks
Custom ram air intake to the ATS air box.
Balanced the engine.
Boost numbers in the mid twentys.
Max EGT numbers around 1100 with the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold right outside the # 8 exhaust port.

6% grade, so you live in the flat country.
Here we have lots of roads with the grade in the double digits.
The street beside my house is a little over 30% at the top.
Want some excitement, try that at 22,000 gross going up or down.

Look in my gallery for a few more pictures.
"86 F250" is the whole truck
"Mods and diagrams" has more pictures of the intake and some other stuff.
Before you ask, no I am not running an intercooler.
My snow plow bracket is right in the way.
With the numbers I am running, if I did not plow snow I would be running an intercooler in a heartbeat.
