We bought our Expedition in 2005. Paid 11000.00 for it with 98000 miles. It now has 125000 miles on it. It started sputtering a few days ago, so we took it in. Initially, we were told it needed a new coil. A couple hours later, the mechanic (someone we trust, btw) called and said the engine is cracked somewhere. He suspects the cylinder wall. Water was in the spark plugs, oil in the radiator... a mess, really.
So, he quoted us 5700.00 to install a jasper engine. I asked him to price a used engine, too, and waiting for that estimate, still.
I don't want to spend that money. We're still reeling from the news, as we've NEVER had trouble with the truck until that one day.
6K is a lot to put into this truck. A trade in would only get us about 2-3K.
I guess alot of it has to do with how much you like the truck. What kind of condition is the body in. That really sucks about the engine, sorry to hear it.
Do you want to sink the money, thats the real question. Is the truck paid off or do you owe a balance. A remanufacted engines warranty is another thing.
Getting a used engine out of a wrecked expy, good idea if cost is good.
Do you tow anything where you need the power of a V-8.
Its really your call. New expys sticker is upwards of 50k for a nice one.
Thanks for replying Doogie. We have no need for the V-8, really. The body and interior is in excellent shape. Leather interior, chrome around the wheels, 5.4L engine. It's a real nice XLT.
Just a couple weeks ago, we started talking of selling it. I almost wish we had.
We're taking a huge loss either way...
I'm not sure we could sell it for more than 3500...
How well do you trust the mechanic? Coil problems, especially on the #4 cylinder, are very common. I've also flushed radiators and found "blooms" of oil in the wash that was deemed to be normal. If it were me I'd replace the offending coil, flush the radiator and get a second opinion. If it turns out to be a cracked cylinder wall a simple compression test should verify it.
I second what bridge is saying. flush the radiator, change the oil, replace the cop and see what happens. if the engine is bad, and if the body and everything is in great shape, i'd replace the engine. better than turning around and taking a big loan for another vehicle. plus you'll get many more years out of it with the new engine.
If you're going to keep it for "years" then I'd bite the bullet and replace with a new engine. If you're going to sell fairly soon, then replace with a used engine as they should be plentiful coming out of F150 and Expys. Like others mention, before dropping many thousands, I'd want to see some concrete proof of failure.
I agree. There are plenty of 5.4 and 4.6 used engines. I would not put a $6K engine in a truck that old unless you love the heck out of it and plan to keep it for a long while. You will be very upside down.
rather than a new engine, get a quote to rebuild your existing engine. Also, your mechanic may be selling you a long block when you only need either the block or just the head(s) depending where the damage is. Explore all options... $5700 is a lot of $$
