What do I need?

I have a 1989 F150 5.0L EFI. The engine is currently out and being rebuilt (me). The block has been bored .030, the cam is CompCam (CompCam recomendation- .462 and .474 gross lift, 206 and 212 dur. at .050, and 114 deg. lobe sep. Supposed to be SDS friendly) Am installing Worlds Windsor Jr. 180 heads (1.94 and 1.60 valves). Also 1.6 roller rockers. Am running Bassani complete system including ceramic shorties, y-pipe, high flow cat, muffler and single exhaust- all 3 inch. I plan on still using air pump system and stock E7TE upper and lower intake manifolds. Will probably do some minor polishing on head runners. Also installed K+N 5 inch round by 10 inch long filter. I fabricated a neat FIPK myself and still incorpoarates cool air ram. Gears are 3.55 to 1. Transmission is 5 speed Mazda. My hopes are to retain the SDS system and use 87 or 89 oct. fuel. This vehicle is a daily driver. What chip is going to be my best bet with this settup?

Thanks

Randy

You're going to need a custom coded chip. Dollar wise, the Diablo is your best bet. However, personally, as a dealer, I wouldn't want to touch custom code for a 13 year old truck on a mail order with your modifcations. Specifically, I don't know the compression ratio and you're asking for 87 or 89. Well, you can't get something for nothing and you won't see much, if any, gain on a speed density system with a chip and 87/89 octane. With the age of your truck, plus the fact that its speed density and the modifications, the odds that the chip will perform 100% to your satisfaction the first time out are 50/50. Not only would you be looking at the chip fee, but also custom coding PLUS shipping it more than once (I don't cover shipping fees on custom code if it doesn't work 100% the first time).

Your best bet is a local chip programmer. Keep in mind that even with a local programmer it will take time, possibly lots of it, because Superchips is backlogged with custom code right now and each attempt can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks! Yikes!

Ken,

Thanks for the reply. Running 87-89 oct. fuel was only on a wish list but I realize from your reply and from other posts that this is probably not feasible in terms of getting performance out of a chip. Running 92 is OK too. I'm in the learning process here. Compression ratio looks to be 9.6 to 1 and 91-92 may be needed here too- depends on who I talk to. Best bet for me is to finish the overhaul and see what performance-drivability I have and then go from there. Maybe MAF will need to be in the works yet too- there again depends on who I talk to. Some say for sure and some say not needed- simply chip the SDS and it'll work. I appreciate your frankness in the problem with custom chipping over the mail - yet I hope to do business some day. If I do need to see a local programmer, how do I find one? Does Diablo have a dealer listing? I live in Western Iowa.

Thanks

Randy

Diablo doesn't maintain a dealer listing available on their site. You can contact them though and they'll try to put you in touch with one. Superchips, however, has a system on their web site. Call the phone number listed, punch in your area code and it puts you in touch with the closest dealer.
