I just bought a 1977 Ford F150 4X4 with a stock 400 engine a few days ago.
The first day I bought the truck it would start right up by just turning the key, and it would idle higher to warm up, like a choke, and as soon as you pressed the gas, the idle would drop to a normal level. Everything seemed fine.
But today, after a few days of driving the truck, every time I try and start it, I have to give it gas while I try to start it. It also takes a few tries before it will start. Once started, it will idle low, and barely hang on unless you give it a little gas. After that it will run fine.
There could also be an issue with the choke linkage. The fact that it all of the sudden idles low when started cold sounds like the fast idle arm broke, leaving you without a fast idle (high idle when cold).
I was thinking choke related too. A few days ago it would start right up and idle high just like it should, and when you just tap the gas it would then idle normally. That's the way it should be, but as each day passes it just takes longer and longer and more gas to start it. It even happens after I shut the engine off for only 30 minutes. Should fire right up, but it doesn't. It seems to get horrible gas mileage right now too.
