engine build & swap in process

ok, the 302 in my 92 f150 finally died a painful knocking death about two months ago. been collecting parts for a bit and finally took the old engine out today, and did a teardown. number 8 piston had debris impact, looks like top ring chunks from either a piston top land breakage or some other detonation based issue.
One thing is the engine is/was completely sludged up everywhere, so the last two owners definitely did not take care of it like they should have...

no worries, new parts going together:
fresh .030 roller block, torque plate honed, stock rods with ARP bolts, polished stock crank, balanced, speed pro HCP 273 cast pistons. GT-40p heads with some light bowl work and some good springs. had the heads flowed today and came up with nice low & mmid lift numbers... exhaust were up to 150-160 cfm from .300 to .500 lift, the intake got up to 185cfm from .400 to .500 lift. still need to find some 1.6 roller rockers.

will be using stock intake for now, maybe gasket match the thing before it goes on. fresh 19lb injectors, new sensors, etc...
still trying to figure out which shorty headers to use, along with a bassani y-pipe.
I have searched and searched and am thinking the bbk coated shorties should work with the p's and proper plug wires.

I'll let you all know how it works out. should be runnign within a week or two.

Jeff.

you know those headers have to run P headers right. you cant throw on just any set otherwise you cant get to the spark plugs. I would personally work over some E7's and get better flow then what you posted. also more exhaust vs intake flow will make more hi rpm power. and since your running speed density you will need to stay with 19# injectors. what cam are you running?

parts

do you know of any company that makes a P specific ceramic coated shorty for a truck application?
not going to use E7's, they would require a lot more port work and a bigger intake valve to get the flow numbers a P head makes with just a bowl cleanup, and they already have a bigger intake valve, better plug location to make power with less timing, and a smaller chamber.
If I was starting from scratch I would think about it, but not now.

as for a cam, running the crane 35-255-2 that everbody around here seems to have good luck with.

as for plug access, once the whole thing is together, you need plugs every 10-15K right? that is less than once a year on my truck, as it is not a daily driver. If you put 30-40K on one yes then I can see it being a pain in the ***.
I will be having a chip burned for the truck once this is all done as I do not plan on changing it again, ever. just wanted a bit more power while towing, a fresh stock 302 might have done it, but I cannot leave well enought alone!

not sure what you mean by a chip because no one makes one for these trucks giving gains. they do have basic chips that change a few things but require premium fuel and only work at wide open throttle. Now if you get a tweecer then you can tune the ecu.

P heads on a truck ive heard are very hard to come by. they are available by MAC for a mustang but doubt they will work for a truck. You might consider selling the P heads and going with some worldproduct iron heads or regular gt40 heads.
