Unhappy Oil leak

Hey guys, I have had a small oil leak coming form the rear of my engine for almost a year now. When i say small I mean not even enough to leave a spot in the driveway. But yesterday I was pulling a 20K trailer and I noticed oil spots all over the front of my trailer. When I looked under my truck the whole back side of the engine/transmission was dripping oil.
I don't know if my rear main seal blew out or if there is something else going on. My wife called the Ford shop today and they told her they have never had a bad rear main on an '03, but there is some kind of sensor that could be leaking. Any ideas? Thanks

ditto for me! i was going to start a post on this issue but figured i would just jack your thread....LOL!!!!!!

I have an 05 f250 6.0 and just as mentioned above my oil pan, front diff, some suspension componets, trans pan, etc is dripping oil and covered with a oily residue! Some one please chime in and help us out with this problem. My truck has 35k miles and is going to the dealer VERY SOON!!! I just want to know what to expect!

remember my truck is an 05, and BAF350 has an 03 if it matters!

then they must not work on very many diesel trucks.....all oil leaks will collect at the bellhousing because it is the lowest point. Rear main seal failure's are not common with these trucks but anything is possible u should still be under the 5/100 so take it in.

Unless the source of the leak is obvious, the best thing to do is have them clean off the underside and remove any oily residue. Then they should put dye in the oil and let you drive it for a few hundred miles or until the leak returns. Then take it back in and they can trace the source of the leak. Otherwise, they might just guess and throw parts at it until they find it.

BAF350,

Do what "Powerstroke_wannabe" said. The tech can only accurately diagnose the oil leak with dye in the oil.

The most common leaks on the 6.0 are as follows in descending order of occurance: (Notice the First for items comprise 65% of all reported leaks and are a simple fix.)

CAC Tubes = 21%
ICP Sensor = 16%
Glow Plug Harness = 14%
Cam/Crank Position Sensor =14%
Front Crankshaft Seal = 8%
Upper to lower block seal (skirt) = 5%
HPOP cover = 4%
Oil Cooler (this leaks into engine coolant) = 4%
Front or Rear Engine Cover = 3%
Rear Crank Seal = 3%
Turbo Charger & VGT actuator = 2%
Covers (oil pan, valve covers, breather) = 2%
Cracked or Porous Block or Head = 1%
IPR valve/Engine Lube oil pump = <1%

Hope this helps

I have an 07 and it has a leak coming from some where above the starter and running down on the starter and passenger side of bell housing. Where is it most likely coming from?

The ONLY accurate way to diagnose and oil leak is to have the tech put dye in the oil.

CAC tubes leaking oil are the number one reason for oil leak complaints on the 6.0.

This is the only way to fix a problematic or slow oil leak... unless it is very obvious!!!!

One of the Ford Tech sites did a pole of all the techs that visit or are members of the site and these were the results so far after over 100 techs responded. The pole specifically asked what the three most common leaks each tech saw and in order of times seen from most to least. Also it asked if the tech uses dye in the oil to locate the leak and 90% of the techs use dye everytime to locate the leak.

I recently (last mo.) bought a 2003 6.0 w/ 47k miles. The Oasis report showed repairs for: 1) Front main seal, 2) Rear main seal, 3) Icp sensor and front main seal again, all pinpointed w/ blacklight.
While crawling around underneath I noticed an oil drip between engine/trans. Back to dealer, blacklight dye, sure enough rear main seal again.
Thankfully there is still almost a year on the engine warranty. After that, things could get expensive if this keeps up.
What gives with all these oil leaks? Seems like diesel lubrication should be well figured out by now, even if the other stuff on top of the engine is new technology.
Any problems I had with my old gasser at least didn't involve oil leaks.
BTW, I love this truck, but I recall saying something similar when I married my (ex) wife.
