Well heres the story. My grandfather is giving me his 1986 F150 with the 5.0 V8. The truck has 83k miles and garage kept it's entire life. This thing looks almost as good as it did the day he bought it except for the dash has a crack in it where it looks like a speaker might be in the center.
Recently he had the radiator flushed, tranny and diff oil changed, new plugs and distributor, fuel filter replaced, and his normal basic maintenance.
I believe its gonna be one helluva a truck and will probably sell my (hate to say it on a ford site) 03 Dodge Ram 5.7 2wd.
Is there anything maintenance wise I should pay attention to? The truck is run maybe twice a week when they take the trash out so it does move and run fine. Any problems that develop on these trucks I should look for?
Way back when, the heater core went bad on my '86 and my dad changed it back when I was little. Easy fix, but something to keep your eye on. I'm trying to think of the things that went bad when my dad still had it, since you might see them in the future. Keep an eye on the master cylinder/brake booster, they can develop leaks over time. Not too many things have gone wrong with my truck. I had to start replacing more stuff now that it has over 300K miles, but that is to be expected. Nothing major yet.
I plan on making this truck my daily driver (sorta) I am supplied a company vehicle so I still dont rack up to many miles.
Some things I would like to change when I get her is a header back exhaust, new intake, maybe a msd type ignition and the heads. And some new wheels, nothing bling bling but better looking than the stockers. Other than that I think she will remain pretty much as is. It has a camper shell on it now and that will for sure go.
Shes red/white with red interior and the cloth seats are perfect. He always kept seat covers and hince they received very minimal wear.
I am gonna have some pics this weekend more than likely so I will post.
Congrats on your new ride! Much more of a truck than some Dodge First step, hit up LMC for a "Dash Pad Cover". Ive looked in countless junkyards for a red dashpad and have yet to find one.
