besides Superchip and Jet.(who could not help me).is there any other source for reprogramming the pcm chip?...i own a 98 ranger, auto trans and i have a bad high idle problem ( have since the day i bought the vehicle, dealer was no help, beyond their control, Ford would not allow then to do as such.....*note that they did not say that it was not possible)...i need a source to rewrite the programming for the idle conrol, and lower the idle rpm from 1000 to a more user friendly 700 a/c in, a/c out,( the brakes are constantly fighting the trans. when in gear)....and this puppy launches if you take your foot off the brakes....not good at all! any help to point me in such direction would be appreciated..thx.....55trucker

It should not be doing that. I have Ranger with an automatic. Like most automatics, it creaps with your foot off the brake, not "launches."
While you MIGHT be able to get it done with a chip (it all depends on your ECU code), it'll cost you because you're looking at custom programming. Idle is normally not touched with chip programming.
I think it needs to be taken in under warranty, have them hook it up to see what the true idle RPM is and also take a look at the TPS.
Hi Ken........thx for the reply.......the truck is now 4 yrs old...while it was under warranty, it lived at the dealer!.i had the tech boys in from Oakville to look at this ( the dealer was out of his league), they replaced the PCM, IAC, THROTTLE BODY, they just didn't know what was causing this....its a programming error in the software design, simple as that....buuuuut.they would NOT reprogram the PCM altho they did admit that doing this would ease the problem...lol, i always got the same response back..(we cannot touch the idle parameters that Ford has set...we would be in breach of our contractual agreement with Ford...therefore the 1000rpm idle stays......now that the truck is off warranty....i'm looking for someone else who has programming knowledge to do this....Steve
Regardless of what they say, its NOT the PCM programming. If it was, EVERY single truck with your ECU code would have this problem. There are 24 ECU codes for that year. If it was the PCM, then there would be tens of thousands of trucks exhibiting this problem and we'd hear about it here. The fact that they replaced the PCM rules out software since replacement PCMs rarely use the same code as the original PCM.
Frankly, I think they have no clue and used the computer as an excuse. I contacted Diablo this afternoon about this and they said they won't touch idle because this condition indicates a problem elsewhere. The only time Diablo will touch the idle speed is if they've made a performance code that raises it unintentionally (they'll then issue a code update with the idle corrected). They will not, however, lower stock idle speed.
